11 – Saul’s Plot Against David

Then a messenger knocked on the door. Jonathan and David hastened to cover themselves, and Jonathan bid the man enter. “The king requests David to return to his chambers,” he said, bowing low.

“For another chance to kill me?” David asked.

“The king has quieted,” the messenger said. “He has announced that he has a new command to grant unto you and wishes you to come into his presence to accept it.”

“I will come,” David said, and the messenger left.

David and Jonathan adjusted their garments and did their best to erase the signs of love on their skins, but Jonathan had a bruise on his shoulder where David’s teeth had made contact with his skin, and he had to pin his robe to cover it.

“You will come with me, and be my champion?” David asked, as he stood by the door of the chamber.

“It is what I wish most in the world,” Jonathan said.

They walked together through the maze of small buildings to the king’s court, and where once Jonathan would have led, with David a pace or two behind, they were in step, as equals.

Jonathan stopped at the door to the king’s audience chamber, took David’s hand, and squeezed it, and David returned the gesture, with a look of great affection in his eyes.

David allowed Jonathan to step into the chamber first, where they saw Saul seated on his cushions, his crown steady on his head and a smile on his face.

“My beloved David,” Saul said, and for a moment jealousy rose in Jonathan’s soul. David was his beloved, and his alone. But he breathed deeply and reminded himself that with his slaughter of the Philistine giant, David had become the beloved of all Israel and Judah, his father included.

“The evil spirit was inside me,” Saul continued, “and you satisfied it by surviving its attempt on your life. Thus I have decided that I will raise you to captain over a thousand, and send you to continue the battle against the Philistines. It is clearly the will of the people that you be their champion, and the will of the Lord as well.”

“I am honored to be of service to my Lord,” David said.

Jonathan’s heart raced and he could not speak. His David, sent to battle once more?

“And if you return victorious, I will give unto you as wife my elder daughter Merab,” he said to David. “Knowing that your prize will be a royal princess as wife will motivate you to be valiant for me and fight the Lord’s fight.”

Jonathan was angered that the king would set his sister as his rival for David’s affections, and his heart pounded in his chest. He was surprised, first; clearly his father did not know of the affection that had risen between David and Michal. And yet, as in the story of Jacob, Leah and Rachel, the older sister must marry first. Would David take both Jonathan’s sisters to wife eventually?

He knew that David must marry a woman at some point; it was the way of their people, to continue their dynasty.
